I recently found one of my student sketchbooks at my sister’s house. It took me back to my days sketching in and around Cape Town and the subjects that interested me then. Turns out they are very similar to the themes that interest me now.
Looking through other artists sketchbooks pique my curiosity. It’s a fun, enjoyable and enlightening thing to do. I’ve put some of my sketches here to give you a bit of back story to my final paintings and prints – to show some of the iceberg under the surface. Some of my sketches get developed further but most of them are more like seeds for new ideas. I hope you enjoy browsing through the sketches. If you have any questions please get in touch. Susan

Student days Cape Town 1987-1989 |
The harbour was a good source of reference, rusty fishing boats, ropes. I also visited the areas around immediate Cape Town. At this time I was concentrating on etching.

Allotments
|
I am part of a collaboration of drawing in gardens over a year. It is interesting visiting other peoples gardens which offers an insight into what we want to surround ourselves with.
I have an allotment, gardeners tend to be rather resourceful when setting out there fruit and vegetables, making use of things normally thrown away. |
